Leading figures in York have wished King Charles a fast recovery after the monarch’s cancer diagnosis.

Buckingham Palace revealed on Monday (February 5) that the King had been diagnosed with a form of cancer - not prostate cancer - which was discovered while the King was being treated in hospital for an enlarged prostate.

Cllr Claire Douglas, leader of City of York Council, said: “I’m sorry to learn of King Charles’ cancer diagnosis. 

“I’m sure he is in the best hands possible and hope his treatment is successful so he can return to full health and public duties as soon as possible.”

Rachael Maskell, MP for York Central, said: “Like all who receive a diagnosis, King Charles will have very best of care on his cancer journey, and I trust that he will make good progress over this period.

“We can be so grateful for the brilliant health staff who do everything they can to help us get through these difficult times.

"I wish him well and a speedy recovery.”

Julian Sturdy, MP for York Outer, said: “I join all of York in wishing His Majesty a full and fast recovery.

"I commend him for being so open about his cancer diagnosis, as he was with his routine prostate treatment, to help promote public understanding.”

Chris Cullwick, Lord Mayor of York, said: “As many of us will know this is extremely difficult news for anyone to receive, and we join others across the country in sending our best wishes to King Charles during this time.”

Cllr Carl Les, leader of North Yorkshire Council, said: "I’m sure all of us at North Yorkshire Council, officers and members, wish the King well and a speedy return to good health.

"Our thoughts are with his family at such a worrying time."

Kevin Hollinrake, MP for Thirsk and Malton, said: "I am saddened to hear of the news that the King has cancer and wish him a swift recovery.

"My thoughts are with him and the wider family at this time."

Last year King Charles officially opened the Minster Refectory restaurant.

Its owner Andrew Pern said: "It is with great sadness that we have heard the news about King Charles, having met him a couple of times, most recently at the opening of the York Minster Refectory.

“I’m sure his resilience and positive attitude will carry him through whatever challenges he faces in the near future and beyond.

“We wish him all the best and hope he gets back to leading the country again as only he can, good luck Sir!”

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he was left “shocked and sad” when he was told about the King’s cancer diagnosis.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “All our thoughts are with him and his family.

“Thankfully, this has been caught early.”

He said that everyone will be hoping the King “gets the treatment that he needs and makes a full recovery”.
